1. The Circus Maximus in July is a scorching hot exposed place during the day. When Quincy Jones hosted his We are the World all star concert in the same locale in Spring of the previous year the turn out was three times larger. Romani go on holiday in July holidays that would have been booked long before Geldof launched the shows. Still by evening the audience is Rome was still as large as in Hyde Park. 2. Only a few weeks prior to LIVE 8 Rome hosted a week long series of events included all-star music gigs, cultural events and NGO seminars all for and on Africa.
Now to the DVD/show:
Being a various artist event like all the shows and other similar events it will also include some "you don't want to go there" acts but having seen a preliminary list of what it is toinclude there is some superb acts you will want to become aquainted with.
The list I have seen for some reason did not include Francesco de Gregori (the Dylan of Italy) who opened the Rome show ...so I don't know if he is to be included or not. If so he belongs on the good list...obviously.
THE BEST:
Elisa (outstanding performance that makes Dido seem like a Pop Idol reject!)Planet Funk (the funky boys from Napoli)Le Vibrazioni (solid rockers) Negrita (a great band doing a some what restricted set they deserved an evening slot)Irene Grandi ( a real pop star)Tiromancino (sublime band)Fiorella Mannoia (superb performance and she covered Manu Chao's "Clandestino")Jovanotti (aka Lorenzo Jovanotti aka Lorenzo) this set was electric the energy peak of the show!)
ALSO GOOD:RonLaura PausiniNekVelvetLigabueFaith HillTim McGrawand others
YOU DON'T WANT TO GO THERE:Claudio BaglioniPoviaAntonello VendittiRenato ZeroDuran Duran
Having seen quite a bit of the Berlin gig I would say that the Rome show was the most soulful of all the events while Berlin was the most straight up no explanation needed rock gig far more real than Hyde Park and light years away from the DisneyWorld expo in Philadelphia and the Disneyland at Versailles in Paris. I am reserving my judgement on the Paris show as I have not seen enough of it but the venue was very wrong but I have still ordered it. The Toronto gig is a similar tone to Berlin no pretensions just straight forward and down to earth.
